Braces for Kids in the East Village
October 19, 2026

Braces for kids are orthodontic appliances that guide teeth and jaws into healthy alignment. I'm Dr. Nina Izhaky, and families come to TDS 4 Kids from across town — including the East Village — with the same questions every parent has: does my child need braces, and when should we start? Our pediatric dentist and orthodontist evaluate your child's bite, jaw growth, and airway together, and recommend braces only when they're the right fit. Here's how I walk East Village parents through it.
When East Village kids usually start
Around age 7 is the standard first orthodontic checkup — not because treatment starts then, but so we can spot growth patterns, crossbites, and crowding early. The evaluation covers bite, spacing, crowding, jaw growth, and airway, with radiographs only when they're clinically useful. Some children benefit from phase 1 orthodontics: guided jaw expansion, crossbite correction, or space maintenance while the child is still growing. Palatal expanders work with growing jaws — but not every child needs them, and not every child needs phase 1. The evaluation determines whether any early work fits your child, and what timing makes sense for them.
Braces, clear aligners, or both
Our pediatric dentist and orthodontist collaborate under one roof in Tribeca, so the plan for your child comes from one team looking at the whole picture — bite, jaw growth, and airway together. Comprehensive orthodontic care may use braces for kids or clear aligners for teens when appropriate, and that choice is determined at the evaluation, not before. For some children, a Myobrace — a removable appliance worn 1–2 hours a day plus overnight — can correct mouth breathing, low tongue posture, and tongue-thrust swallowing. It's not for every child. We also do airway checks at every exam, watching for mouth-breathing red flags (snoring in children is often a sign of a restricted airway), and our pediatric laser dentistry keeps treatment comfortable.
Getting here from the East Village
We see a lot of families from Stuyvesant Town & Peter Cooper Village, and from the Avenues — A, B, C — who head over after a morning at the Tompkins Square Park playground. Getting to us is straightforward: take the 6 at Astor Place or Bleecker St downtown to Chambers, or go cross-town on the L to 14th and transfer downtown. PS 15 Roberto Clemente (333 E 4th St) families make the trip regularly, and it's an easy ride.

Comfort-first visits
The first orthodontic visit is mostly looking, measuring, and talking — no pressure. We use kid-friendly words for everything, give honest explanations in plain language, and move at a pace your child can handle. We never force anything. And for the youngest ones: the first dental visit should happen by the first birthday, so kids grow up comfortable in the chair long before braces ever come up.

Frequently Asked Questions
At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?
Around age 7 is the standard first orthodontic checkup. That's not when treatment starts — it's when we can spot growth patterns, crossbites, and crowding early, and the evaluation guides timing from there.
Braces or clear aligners — how do you decide?
The evaluation determines that. Clear aligners work for teens when appropriate and worn as directed; braces fit when the plan needs them. We explain which one fits your child and why, before anything starts.
How much do braces for kids cost?
The exact cost is set only at the evaluation — it depends on what your child needs. We lay out the full plan and the cost plainly, in writing, before anything starts, so there are no surprises.
How do we get to your office from the East Village?
Take the 6 at Astor Place or Bleecker St downtown to Chambers — we're a short walk from there at 54 Warren Street, New York, NY 10007. Cross-town works too: the L to 14th, then downtown to Chambers.
If you're wondering about braces — or anything about your child's bite — start with an evaluation. We'll tell you exactly what we see and what fits. Call (212) 561-5303 — we're open Mon–Fri 8am–7pm and Sat–Sun 9am–4pm at 54 Warren Street, New York, NY 10007.
