Braces for Kids in the West Village
October 19, 2026

Braces for kids are orthodontic appliances that guide teeth and jaws into healthy alignment. I'm Dr. Nina Izhaky, and at TDS 4 Kids in Tribeca I've watched hundreds of children start their orthodontic journey — some with early guidance around age 7, many with full braces in their pre-teen years. A pediatric dentist and an orthodontist evaluate your child's bite, jaw growth, and airway together. We recommend braces only when they're the right fit, and we work side by side under one roof, so nothing gets lost between offices.
When West Village kids usually start
Around age 7 is the standard first orthodontic checkup — not because treatment starts then, but to spot growth patterns, crossbites, and crowding early. At the evaluation we look at bite, spacing, crowding, jaw growth, and airway, with radiographs only when they're clinically useful. Some children benefit from phase 1 orthodontics: guided jaw expansion, crossbite correction, space maintenance — early work while your child is still growing. Palatal expanders can widen a growing jaw before it finishes developing. Not every child needs phase 1. The evaluation determines the timing — never a guess, never pressure.
Braces, clear aligners, or both
One team handles the whole plan under one roof. Comprehensive orthodontic care may use braces for kids or clear aligners for teens when appropriate — and that's determined at the evaluation, not before. Aligners work well for teens who will wear them as directed; braces work when the treatment plan needs the control they give. For some growing children we may suggest a Myobrace — a removable appliance worn one to two hours a day plus overnight that works on mouth breathing, low tongue posture, and tongue-thrust swallowing. It's not for every child. Our pediatric laser dentistry keeps appointments comfortable when any soft-tissue adjustment is needed.
Getting here from the West Village
Families on the quiet, narrow streets off Jane Street, or near Bleecker Playground, often pair the visit with a trip to the Hudson River Park piers — the kids burn energy at Pier 46 or Pier 51, then we see them at the office. PS 3 families come up Hudson Street after school pickup. Getting here is simple: take the 1, 2, or 3 from 14th Street downtown to Chambers Street, or walk straight down Hudson Street to Warren Street. We're at 54 Warren Street in Tribeca, a short ride from the Village.

Comfort-first visits
The first orthodontic visit is mostly a look-and-chat. We use kid-friendly words, explain honestly what's happening, and move at a pace your child can handle. We never force anything. This approach starts much earlier — the first visit by first birthday — so by the time braces come up, the office already feels familiar. And every exam includes an airway check, because mouth breathing and snoring in children are often signs of a restricted airway, and we watch for those red flags.
What Tribeca parents say
TDS 4 Kids holds a 5-star Google rating — and the best proof is what parents write in their own words. Read our Google reviews We read every single one, and if you're on the fence about braces, hearing from families who've been through it helps.
Frequently Asked Questions
At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?
Around age 7 is the standard first checkup — not the start of treatment. That visit lets us spot growth patterns, crossbites, and crowding early, and the evaluation guides the timing of anything that follows.
Braces or clear aligners — how do you decide?
The evaluation determines. Clear aligners work for teens when appropriate and worn as directed; braces when the plan needs them. We explain which fits your child and why — plainly, before anything starts.
How much do braces for kids cost?
The exact cost is set at the evaluation, because it depends on what your child needs. We lay out the full plan and the cost plainly, in writing, before anything starts — no surprises.
How do we get to your office from the West Village?
Take the 1, 2, or 3 from 14th Street downtown to Chambers Street, then walk a few blocks to 54 Warren Street. Or walk straight down Hudson Street to Warren Street — many Village families do.
