Fluoride and Sealants: Our Prevention Plan for Kids

Most cavities in children are preventable. Two of the simplest, most effective tools we have are professional fluoride treatment and dental sealants. They are quick, painless, and they work quietly in the background for months and years.

I am Dr. Nina. Here is how we use fluoride and sealants, and how we decide whether your child needs them.

What fluoride does

Professional topical fluoride may help strengthen enamel and support its resistance to mineral loss. Fluoride supports enamel remineralization and resistance to acid-related mineral loss. Our team selects and applies the professional product when it is clinically appropriate, based on your child's exam, history, and individual cavity risk.

What sealants do

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings placed over selected pits and fissures, usually on the chewing surfaces that are harder to keep clean. They cover the grooves where plaque and food collect, the spots where a toothbrush cannot quite reach. Sealants are used on selected teeth, not every tooth automatically.

How we decide

Neither treatment is automatic in our office. At the checkup, we evaluate the teeth, existing restorations, oral hygiene, and cavity risk. Then we explain whether fluoride, sealants, both, or neither are appropriate. Recommendations follow the findings, not a script. They may be considered when the exam identifies increased cavity risk, for selected teeth with deep grooves that are difficult to clean, or as part of ongoing, individualized cavity-prevention care.

What to expect

Both are simple. After the examination and recommendation, the selected material is applied to clean tooth surfaces using the appropriate clinical technique. There is no drilling, no anesthesia, and no recovery time. At future visits, we review preventive needs and check the condition of the sealants.

One honest note

Fluoride and sealants are powerful, but they do not replace brushing, flossing, regular examinations, or treatment of existing dental disease. They are parts of a broader preventive strategy. Think of them as reinforcement for the daily habits you are already building at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need both fluoride and sealants?

Not always. We recommend fluoride, sealants, both, or neither based on the exam, your child's history, and individual cavity risk.

Are sealants painful to apply?

No. Sealants are painted onto clean tooth surfaces. There is no drilling, no anesthesia, and no recovery time.

How long do sealants last?

It varies. We check the condition of sealants at future dental visits and review preventive needs each time.

Do fluoride and sealants replace brushing?

No. They are parts of a broader preventive strategy and do not replace brushing, flossing, regular examinations, or treating existing disease.
