Should You Pull a Loose Baby Tooth? A Pediatric Dentist Explains!
June 3, 2026

Losing a baby tooth is a major rite of passage for every child (and a magical time for the Tooth Fairy!). But when that first little tooth starts to wiggle, parents are often left with a classic question: Should you pull a loose baby tooth, or let it fall out on its own?
At Tribeca Dental Studio, we love guiding families through these exciting milestones. In our latest video, our very own pediatric dental expert breaks down exactly what to do when a tooth gets loose—and shares a funny personal story along the way!
The Golden Rule: Let Nature Take Its Course
As a general rule of thumb, our pediatric dentists recommend letting baby teeth fall out on their own. The human body is pretty amazing at pacing itself. When a permanent adult tooth is ready to emerge, it naturally dissolves the roots of the baby tooth sitting above it. As those roots disappear, the baby tooth gets looser and looser until it naturally detaches.
Yanking a tooth out prematurely before the roots have fully dissolved can cause unnecessary pain, bleeding, and even damage to the delicate gum tissue or the underlying permanent tooth.
When Is It Okay to Help a Loose Tooth?
While patience is key, there is an exception! If a baby tooth is very, very loose—meaning it’s practically dangling by a thread and causing your child discomfort when they eat—it is perfectly fine to give it a tiny helping hand.
Here is how to do it safely:
Wash Your Hands: Always make sure you or your child have completely clean fingers before touching the area.
Use a Tissue or Gauze: Grip the tooth gently with a clean tissue or piece of medical gauze.
Give a Gentle Twist: If it’s truly ready, a gentle squeeze or tiny twist will easily remove that tooth without pain or heavy bleeding.
Note: If the tooth resists or your child flinches in pain, stop! It’s not quite ready yet.
Help! What If My Child Swallows Their Baby Tooth?
It is incredibly common for a child to accidentally swallow a loose baby tooth while eating a crunchy snack or sleeping. If this happens to your little one, don’t panic! In fact, our pediatric dentist has a confession to make: "I actually swallowed my first tooth, and I was okay!" Baby teeth are very small and smooth. If swallowed, they will pass safely through your child’s digestive system without causing any harm. The only real bummer is missing out on leaving it under the pillow—but don't worry, the Tooth Fairy accepts notes from parents explaining the situation!
When to Visit a Pediatric Dentist in NYC
Most of the time, the transition from baby teeth to adult teeth goes smoothly. However, you should give us a call at Tribeca Dental Studio if:
- A baby tooth has been loose for several months but refuses to fall out.
- The permanent tooth is starting to grow in directly behind or in front of the loose baby tooth (sometimes called "shark teeth").
- Your child experiences severe pain, swelling, or signs of infection in their gums.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
At what age do kids start losing baby teeth?
Most children start losing their first baby teeth around age 6. Usually, the lower front teeth (central incisors) are the very first to go!
What happens if you pull a baby tooth too early?
Pulling a baby tooth too early can damage the surrounding gums and cause bleeding. More importantly, baby teeth act as placeholders for adult teeth. If a tooth is removed too early, the surrounding teeth might shift into the empty space, potentially causing crowding issues for the adult teeth later on.
Is it normal for a loose tooth to bleed?
A small amount of spotting or bleeding is completely normal when a tooth finally lets go. Simply have your child bite down gently on a clean piece of gauze or a paper towel for a few minutes until it stops.
Does it hurt when a baby tooth falls out?
If the tooth falls out naturally or is gently removed when it's completely loose, it shouldn't hurt at all! Your child might just feel a slight tingle or pressure.
