The 2-Minute Mission: How to Make Brushing Fun (and Effective)
April 1, 2026

The Reality Check: Brushing a toddler or school-aged child’s teeth shouldn't feel like a workout. At Tribeca Dental Studio 4Kids, we believe that the best dental habits are built through play, not pressure.
1. The "Tell-Show-Do" Technique
We use this in our Tribeca studio, and you can use it at home.
- Tell: Explain what the brush is doing (e.g., "The brush is a little car cleaning the tooth-road").
- Show: Brush your own teeth first to show them it’s easy and painless.
- Do: Let them try, then follow up with a "finish-up" brush to ensure every surface is reached.
2. Technology is Your Friend
If your child resists, try using a brushing app or a 2-minute "brushing song" from YouTube. Turning it into a dance party makes the time fly by.
3. The Right Tools for the Job
- Soft Bristles: Always use a soft-bristled brush to protect their delicate gums.
- Rice-Sized Fluoride: For children under three, a tiny smear (the size of a grain of rice) is all you need. For kids 3+, use a pea-sized amount.

4. Don't Forget the "Hidden" Spots
Bacteria love to hide in the grooves of the back molars. This is where most pediatric cavities start. Gently angle the brush at 45 degrees toward the gum line to sweep away plaque.
Pro-Tip from the Studio: If you notice your child is a "mouth breather" or has trouble keeping their mouth open for long, it might be an Airway Health signal. Mention it at your next visit, and we can do a quick growth assessment.
