Stainless Steel Crowns for Kids' Teeth

A stainless steel crown is a ready-made metal cap that covers a baby tooth completely, protecting it until the tooth falls out on its own. I recommend one when a baby molar is too damaged for a regular filling to hold — a big cavity that wraps around several sides of the tooth, a tooth that fractured, or a tooth that needed pulp therapy. It is one of the most reliable ways to save a baby tooth instead of pulling it.

Why save a baby tooth at all?

Baby molars hold space for the adult teeth coming behind them. When one is lost too early, the neighboring teeth drift into the gap and the permanent tooth can come in crooked or stuck. That is why, during your child's regular checkups and cleanings, I look at every tooth and take radiographs only when they are clinically useful — so we catch damage early, when the tooth can still be saved.

What happens during the appointment

In my office we go slowly, use kid-friendly words, and never force anything. First I make sure the tooth is completely comfortable. Then I gently shape the tooth so the crown fits, try on a few sizes to find the best match, and cement the crown in place. Most kids are surprised by how quick it is, and they can eat and chew normally the same day.

Afterward, there is nothing special your child has to do — the crown is cemented on and ready for normal chewing right away. I do ask parents to keep an eye on the bite for the first day or two; if your child says the tooth feels too tall when biting, call us and I will adjust it in minutes. At the next checkup I check the crown along with everything else, making sure the gums around it stay healthy.

What if the damage is small?

Not every cavity needs a crown. Smaller cavities do very well with tooth-colored fillings, and teeth with nerve involvement may need pulp therapy first. Which option fits your child is something I decide only after an in-person evaluation — never from a photo or a guess. Frequently Asked Questions

Will my child feel the crown?

No. I make sure the tooth is completely comfortable before we start, and most kids forget the crown is even there within a day.

Is a silver crown very noticeable?

It is metal-colored, but these crowns go on back molars where they barely show. Durability is what matters most for a baby molar.

How long does a stainless steel crown last?

It is designed to last until the baby tooth falls out naturally on its own schedule.

Does my child still need to brush that tooth?

Yes — the gums around the crown still need daily brushing and flossing, just like every other tooth.
