The Age 7 Orthodontic Checkup

The age 7 orthodontic checkup is a first look at how your child's bite and jaws are developing — not a commitment to braces. By age 7, the first permanent molars are usually in and the front teeth are arriving, which gives an orthodontist enough information to spot growth patterns early, while they are still easy to guide.

Most 7-year-olds do not need treatment yet. The point of the visit is to answer one question: is everything developing the way it should, or is there something we should gently guide now so it does not become a bigger problem later? When we catch a narrow upper jaw, a crossbite, or crowding early, Phase 1 treatment can work with growth instead of fighting against it later.

What Phase 1 can do

Phase 1 orthodontics is early, limited treatment timed to a child's growth. In my office that usually means guided jaw expansion to widen a narrow upper arch, crossbite correction so the jaws meet evenly, and space maintenance to hold room for teeth that have not erupted yet. It is not full braces — it is targeted guidance, and it often makes any later treatment shorter and simpler.

Why we do it under one roof

Our pediatric dentists and orthodontists work together in the same Tribeca office, so your child's checkups and orthodontic evaluations happen in one place, with one team looking at the same records. I am already watching mouth breathing red flags and jaw growth at every exam — the age 7 visit just adds the orthodontist's eyes to what I am already tracking. No referrals across town, no records lost between offices.

If your child is around 7 — or past 7 and never had that first look — it is a simple, no-pressure visit. We are at 54 Warren Street, open Monday through Friday 8am–7pm and weekends 9am–4pm. Call 212-561-5303 to schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my 7-year-old get braces at this visit?

Almost certainly not. Most children this age just need monitoring. If we recommend Phase 1, it is limited, growth-timed treatment — not full braces.

What if we missed the age 7 window?

Come anyway. The visit is still useful at 8, 9, or 10 — we just have less growth left to work with, so sooner is better than later.

Does Phase 1 mean no braces later?

Not necessarily. Phase 1 guides growth early; some children still need a shorter Phase 2 in the teen years. Many need less of it, though.

Is the evaluation covered like a regular checkup?

Coverage varies by plan. Call us at 212-561-5303 and we will check your benefits before the visit so there are no surprises.
